Shopper charged $300 for $125 order - alarm bells rang before items left store (2024)

A MOM was left in despair after being charged $300 for her groceries that were only meant to come to $125.

Lawrene Harchaoui, from Ohio, ordered via Instacart but knew something wasn’t quite right before her delivery even left the supermarket.

She had been using delivery services for a few years, before placing a Meijer order in January 2022, as reported by NBC affiliate WCMH.

Harchaoui told how red flags appeared before her items left the grocery store.

“It looked like[the shopper] was shopping really quick,” she told WCMH.

It emerged the shopper was putting more items in Harchaoui’s carts than she asked for.

She shared pictures of her receipts.

Five bags of parmesan shredded cheese had been added to her cart and five bags of salad, according to receipts she shared with the network.

Her final receipt also featured five packs of turkey and five tubs of sour cream.

She was hit with a bill for $300 when the goods she had ordered came to $125.

Harchaoui claimed the driver never showed up with her order.

She contacted Instacart and a second shopper went to the store to grab her groceries.

But, a similar situation played out.

“I don’t want 10 bags of lettuce. Please stop,” she cried.

Instacart issued a refund and Harchaoui was told it would be processed within 10 days.

The company has warned users don't see refunds in their Instacart account.

Top Grocery Delivery Apps:

Shoppers can save time by getting someone else to get their groceries for them using a variety of apps and services.

Instacart: Works with major retailers including Albertsons, ALDI, Costco, CVS, Kroger, Sam's Club, and Wegmans. Groceries can be delivered as quickly as one hour and can be arranged to suit your schedule. However, prices can differ compared to those that are in-store. There is a $99 per year or $9.99 per month membership fee.

Amazon Fresh: This is an off-shoot of Amazon. It offers customers fresh groceries and household goods. The service works similarly to Instacart and offers same-day delivery and exclusive offers to those with Amazon Prime.

Walmart Grocery: Walmart shoppers can place orders via the Walmart app and either pick them up or have them delivered to their door. The retailer calls it "the easiest way to shop."

Shipt: Membership costs $99 per year with unlimited free deliveries on orders over $35. It enables customers to speak directly with their assigned Shipt shoppers to make special requests. The company also works closely with Target.

Kroger Delivery: Kroger shoppers can get their groceries taken to their door at a delivery time that suits them. It also offers customers the chance to spend digital coupons so they do not miss out on key deals. However, the retailer's service does not offer same-day delivery.

Target Same-Day Delivery: Orders can arrive within a few hours of being placed. Shoppers can get real-time updates on their orders which will allow for last-minute changes and special requests. Target states that there are "no delivery markups" and Target Circle deals are included. Shoppers can pay per delivery or become a Target Circle 360 member for unlimited deliveries.

The U.S. Sun has approached Meijer and Instacart for comment.

Harchaoui is not the only customer who has been overcharged after ordering grocery items.

In August last year, Jill McCormick was wide-eyed when she was billed almost $3,000 for an order meant to cost her $282.

She placed a Kroger order but her groceries were not delivered by Instacart.

Despite not receiving her order, she was hit with a charge worth thousands.

She was reimbursed by Kroger.
